Condor #789 was named "Arthur" to honor the life and memory of Arthur Shiffrar. The name suits this condor quite well, Arthur is not only wise beyond his years but also possesses a resilient personality much like that of his father, #199 aka The Great One.

Young Arthur's condor story is quite unique, he was raised in a redwood nest deep in the Ventana Wilderness and successfully fledged with absolutely no human intervention or assistance. His arrival was a pleasant surprise to us all.

In late January 2016, Biologists were at the Big Sur Condor Sanctuary watching Condor #787 (a confirmed untagged juvenile, aka "Sky") perched next to her mom when another untagged chick flew in to view, this was the first time Arthur was seen by Biologists. The next day Condor #199, who we suspect to be the new chick's father, pushed all the other birds off of a calf carcass on the release slope and stood guard, giving him a chance to feed uninterrupted. Biologists eventually captured Arthur and collected a blood sample for gender and DNA testing. The results determined that Arthur was a male condor and indeed the wild offspring of #199 and #438. Arthur is often seen by his father's side but is starting to spend more time with other young condors as he grows older and more independent of his parents.
